What is the Disability Bond?

The program

In 2008, the federal government introduced the Canada Disability Savings Bond and the Canada Disability Savings Grant to help support people living with a prolonged medical condition financially. Highlights of the Bond program:

  • Amount: the Disability Bond is worth up to $20,000.
  • Income limits (2026): the full $1,000 a year is paid when adjusted family net income is $38,237 or less. A partial Bond is paid up to $58,523.
  • Availability: over 311,000 Canadians had a Registered Disability Savings Plan at the end of 2024, only about one in three of those eligible.
  • Total payments: since 2008, the federal government has paid over $2.1 billion in Disability Bonds (as of the end of 2024).
  • Unclaimed amounts: in some cases, unclaimed Disability Bond amounts can be collected retroactively (up to $10,000).
  • Provincial benefits: receiving the Disability Bond does not affect your provincial benefits.

You must be eligible to receive the Disability Bond.

How do I collect this benefit?

The process

There are four steps to collecting the Disability Bond. Once your eligibility is confirmed, you must apply to receive your entitlements, including any unclaimed amounts from previous years. After the federal government receives your application, deposits (if applicable) begin about 45 days after you qualify.

  1. Eligibility

Find out whether you are eligible for the Disability Bond using the Disability Benefits Assessment Tool.

  2. Confirmation

Receive confirmation of your eligibility. If you are not eligible, you will be told why and pointed to resources that may help.

  3. Apply

If you are eligible, you must apply to receive the benefit. In many cases, unclaimed amounts from previous eligible years can be collected retroactively (up to $10,000).

  4. Collect

Disability Bond payments are deposited each year into your registered account until you reach the $20,000 lifetime maximum or are no longer eligible.

Please note: RDSP Canada does not open registered accounts. Our role is to help people living with a prolonged medical condition find out whether they are eligible, and to give them the information they need to claim their government entitlements.

How much does this cost?
