4.2 Benefits | Ontario Disability Support Programs

Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP)
ODSP provides many health benefits and disability-related benefits. These benefits can help you with many different types of costs, including health, dental, vision, assistive devices, and other expenses related to disability or medical conditions.

ODSP Income Support provides up to $1,308/month for basic needs and shelter.

Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities (ACSD) Program
If you are a parent or guardian who is caring for a child with a severe disability you may be able to get financial support through ACSD. This program provides financial support for eligible families to cover some of the extra costs of caring for a child who has a severe disability.

Assistive Devices Program (ADP)
The Assistive Devices Program (ADP) helps people with long-term physical disabilities pay for customized equipment, like wheelchairs and hearing aids.

Developmental Services Ontario (DSO)
Developmental Services Ontario (DSO) is the access point for adult developmental services funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS) in Ontario. There are nine DSO locations across the province.

When a person turns 18, their access to children’s developmental services — such as Special Services at Home, the Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities program, and the Ontario Autism Program — comes to an end. At that point, they must apply through Developmental Services Ontario (DSO) to determine their eligibility for adult supports funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS) in their community.

Guaranteed Access Program (GAP)
The Guaranteed Access Program (GAP) is designed to provide a one-time, tax-free payout to a person's loved ones at the time of their passing.

This program is available to individuals who hold a valid Disability Tax Credit (DTC) Certificate or are receiving benefits through a provincial disability support program.

Participants contribute a small amount each month in return for a one-time lump sum payment (minimum $10,000) to the person of their choosing.

Ontario Works
If you are in financial need and require assistance with basic expenses such as food and housing, you may be eligible to apply for financial and employment support through Ontario Works. Ontario Works provides:

Financial assistance to help cover the cost of basic living expenses for you and your eligible family members, including food and rent.

Health benefits for you and your dependents.

Employment supports such as resume writing workshops, job counselling, job-specific training, and basic
education programs.

If you qualify, the amount of financial assistance you receive will depend on your individual circumstances. In most cases, participation in employment-related activities is required in order to continue receiving support.

For example, a single person could receive up to $733 per month for basic needs and shelter.

Special Services at Home (SSAH)
The Special Services at Home (SSAH) program helps families taking care of a child with a developmental and/or physical disability. It provides funding to buy services and supports that help parents with caring for their child, or that support the child to join activities at home and in the community.

Ontario Autism Program (OAP)
The Ontario Autism Program (OAP) offers support to families of children and youth on the autism spectrum.

Children and youth who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by a qualified professional are eligible for the program. Children receive services and supports until the age of 18.
